GCG 2016 Speakers

GlassCon Global 2016 speakers came from all areas of the architectural glass and glazing industry and presented new techniques, designs and applications for glass as a versatile, safe and competitive material. The conference agenda and speakers provided an educational forum where glass professionals expanded their knowledge in a continually-evolving technical environment. Participants gained in-depth knowledge from industry experts, world-renowned architects and international researchers who drive product innovation, design optimization and cutting-edge research, and push the limits of glass in the building envelope.

A. William Lingnell, P.E.

Lingnell Consulting Services

Bill Lingnell has been involved in engineering, technical management and construction of major building projects throughout the United States, Canada and other countries. He has consulted as a technical authority and specialist for: general contractors, manufacturers, fabricators, owners, developers, architects and individuals relating to the many facets of glass and wall systems used on architectural construction projects. As a consultant, he has also served engineers, testing agencies, insurance companies, building managers, window producers, curtain wall consultants and the legal profession on many projects and assignments requiring specialization in glass and wall system technology. He serves as the technical consultant to the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (formerly Sealed Insulating Glass Manufacturers Association--SIGMA). Lingnell has over 51 years of experience in the technical field of glass and architectural products and is considered one of the world's foremost experts in the field.


Anirban Basu


Anirban Basu is Chairman & CEO of Sage Policy Group, Inc., an economic and policy consulting firm in Baltimore, Maryland.  Mr. Basu is among the most recognizable economists, in part because of his consulting work on behalf of numerous clients, including prominent developers, bankers, brokerage houses, energy suppliers, law firms and business associations.

On behalf of government agencies and non-profit organizations, Mr. Basu has written several high-profile economic development strategies, including co-authoring economic development strategies for Baltimore City and Baltimore County, Maryland.  Among other things, Anirban serves as the chief economist to Associated Builders and Contractors (national) and as chief economic advisor to the Construction Financial Management Association.

Dr. Ing. Barbara Siebert

Ingenieurbüro Dr. Siebert

Barbara Siebert, received her civil engineering degree from TU München. After many years as an employee in a consulting office, she now has her own consulting office Ingenieurbüro Dr. Siebert which specializes in the application of glass. The doctors' thesis on the calculation of point helded glasses was accepted in 2003. She is a publicly appointed and sworn expert for glass. Her office works on worldwide projects with glass and metal.


Bert Van Lancker

Ghent University

Bert Van Lancker graduated magna cum laude from Ghent University, Belgium, with a Masters of Science in Civil Engineering in 2013. Since October 2013, he started working on his PhD regarding structural hybrid cold-formed steel glass panels, at the Laboratory for Research on Structural Models (LMO) at Ghent University.

In 2014, he won the GlassCon Global Young Researchers 1st Place Award in Philadelphia, USA, with his paper on the rotational stiffness of linear adhesive glass-metal connections.


Bolaji Afolabi

Texas Tech University

Bolaji Afolabi is a Ph.D. student at the department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering under the guidance of Dr. S. Morse and Dr. H Norville P.E at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas. She also received her BSc. and MSCE in Civil Engineering at Texas Tech University. Miss. Afolabi has over 4 years of experience working in the Glass Research and Testing Laboratory at Texas Tech University. Her research focuses on window glass strength and design. A major aspect of her research is performing destructive load tests on fully tempered window glass lites using ASTME997 standard.


Bruce Nicol

Dow Corning

Bruce is responsible for raising the profile of Dow Corning in the innovation development for high performance façade technologies. Bruce has close working ties with all major design consultants and developers. He also works with design teams to develop façade design details, specifications and installation strategies at all stages of the plan of work. 

Bruce's main focus has been in London due to the number of specialists based there. However, due to past history working within the Glass industry for Eckelt, Saint Gobain, the contacts have stretched into North America, S.E. Europe, Middle East and Japan. 

Providing the highest level of support with quick, professional and pro-active responses has been the key to many successes within the project business. His primary goal is to produce high quality architectural solutions on every scale.


Charles D. Clift

Curtain Wall Design and Consulting, Inc.

Charles D. Clift is President and Chief Structural Engineer at Curtain Wall Design and Consulting, Inc. in Dallas, Texas. He received a Masters of Science, Civil Engineering at Rice University and a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering at Oklahoma State University. He has been directing and managing the world's largest curtain wall consulting company since 1980. Charles is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers.


Dr. Christian Louter

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft)

Dr. Christian Louter is Assistant Professor of Structural Glass Design at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in The Netherlands. At TU Delft he investigates novel structural glass solutions and teaches structural design. Christian obtained his PhD Cum Laude from TU Delft in 2011 and has worked for several years as a post-doctoral researcher at EPFL in Switzerland before returning to TU Delft in 2015. Besides his research and educational activities Christian is an Editor in Chief of the Glass Structures & Engineering Journal (Springer), co-organizer of the international Challenging Glass Conferences, member of the Eurocode committee on Structural Glass and Core Group Member of the European COST Action TU1403 on Adaptive Facades.


Dirk Schulte

APG International

Dirk Schulte is the Vice President of Business Development, Sales & Engineering of APG International, as well as the Managing Director of APG's Middle Eastern operation. His special expertise in sophisticated structural steel and glass applications and long term international market experience allows him to lead the company operations in all kinds of special feature façade & building envelope structures. Dirk is also the co-founder of the APG R&D Kitchen concerning Advanced Facade Technologies.


Doug Noble

University of Southern California

Professor Douglas Noble, Ph.D., FAIA, is currently Chair of the Ph.D. program in Architecture at the University of Southern California. He is the Discipline Head for Building Science. He is a practicing architect and has served as a consultant to a number of firms. He is the author of several books, including "Building Information Modeling: BIM in Current and Future Practice." His interests are in the areas of computer-supported design and the science of design. He served as Associate Dean from 2007-2009.  With Karen Kensek, he hosts the FACADE TECTONICS conferences.


Elizabeth Chu Richter

Elizabeth Chu Richter, FAIA, is the CEO of Richter Architects based in Corpus Christi, Texas.  The firm is a recognized leader in the profession with award-winning designs.  It was the recipient of the Architecture Firm Award from the Texas Society of Architects in 2011. Recent projects include the National Museum of the Pacific War, Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve, Del Mar College Academic and Music Complex, Manila American Cemetery Visitor Center in the Philippines, and GSA Design Excellence U.S. Land Ports of Entry in El Paso, Laredo, and Columbus, New Mexico.

Elizabeth is the Immediate Past President of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).  She was the fourth woman to served as national president in the AIA's 158 year history.  A Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, Elizabeth is also an honorary member of the Japan Institute of Architects, the Korean Institute of Architects, and the Australian Institute of Architects. She is frequently invited to speak on leadership, design, and the future of the architectural profession.  Most recently, she was invited to lecture at the Savannah College of Arts and Design and the 2016 US-Korean Conference of Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association.

Geralt Siebert

Bundeswehr University Munich

Geralt Siebert is a Professor at UniBw Munich and gives lectures on the application of glass in a special masters course. He is the convener of DIN 18008 German Glass design code and a member of several European standardization working groups (prEN16615, Eurocode11...).

In addition he owns a consulting engineers office and is a member of several national and international organizations such as: IABSE, ASTM, CTBUH.


Guo Zheng Yew

Texas Tech University

Guo Zheng Yew has been with Texas Tech University since 2011 and is currently pursuing his doctorate in civil engineering at Texas Tech with a focus on finite element analysis and glass mechanics. Prior to his graduate work in the United States, he was involved in research projects centered on offshore structures in Malaysia.


Helen Sanders

SAGE Glass

Helen has 20 years' of experience in the glass industry and over 15 years' of experience in dynamic glass technology and manufacturing. She has a M.A. in Natural Sciences (Chemistry) and a Ph.D. in Surface Science from the University of Cambridge, England. She is an active member of a number of industry organizations, serving as the chair of IGMA's emerging technologies and innovation committee, the Glazing Industry Code Committee and ASTM's Chromogenic Glazings task group.


Helmut Hohenstein

Hohenstein Consultancy was founded in January of 2005 to support the glass, window and curtain walling, solar and thermal insulation building industry and related governmental and scientific institutions worldwide. Dr. Hohenstein has built up an intensive international network between governmental and scientific institutions, test and certification bodies and the producers and building industry in Europe and China as well as in other emerging markets like the Gulf, Russia with former GUS states, South Korea and India.


H. Scott Norville

Texas Tech University

H. Scott Norville, P.E., Ph.D., and F. ASTM, serves as a Professor in the Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering Department at Texas Tech University. He served as Chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department from 2004 through 2014. He has spent more than 30 years conducting research on glass strength and behavior. He is co-author of the SDG software, Window Glass Design 5 and Blast Resistant Glazing Design. He serves as Vice Chair of ASTM Subcommittee E06.52 which maintains ASTM E 1300 and other standards related to glass strength and as Vice Chair of ASTM Committee F12 on Building Security.

Dr. Iris Maniatis

Bundeswehr University Munich

Dr. Iris Maniatis is working as a senior researcher with the glass research group at the Institute and Laboratory for Structural Engineering at Universität der Bundeswehr München and is a lecturer for glass structures.

She also is working as a consulting engineer and project manager for the engineering office Dr. Siebert in Munich. Iris specializes in glass structures and is a member of several national and international committees related to glass. 


Jamison Guest

Heintges & Associates

Jamison Guest is an Associate at Heintges & Associates, a building envelope and curtain wall consulting firm. Since joining the firm in 2007 he has contributed to the technical design and construction of complex facades in the U.S., Asia and the Middle East. His work has included the development of custom facades for flagship retail projects, as well as fully custom, unitized facades for new construction and re-clad applications. Jamison is a licensed Architect in the State of New York and holds a Masters degree in architecture from Columbia University. He has taught at Columbia University's New York/Paris program and has been an invited juror at reviews at other schools. He is currently a façade consultant studio critic at the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate level design program. 


Jane Duncan

Royal Institute of British Architects

Jane Duncan became the 75th President of the RIBA on 1 September 2015.

Jane Duncan Architects, an award winning practice of 16 architects and interior designers in Buckinghamshire, undertakes a mixture of high-end residential, sports and leisure, commercial and community projects. 

Trained at the Bartlett UCL, Jane set up in practice almost immediately after qualifying. She was 6 years Vice President Practice, and since 2013 the RIBA's Equality and Diversity champion.

Jane is also a local community revitalisation champion, mentors and gives careers guidance to local school pupils. 


Jeff Nixon

Glass Coatings & Concepts

Jeff Nixon earned a degree in Chemistry from Indiana University. In 1987, he joined The Shepherd Color Company, a leader in ceramic pigments. In 2004, he assumed responsibility for Sales and Technical Service at Glass Coatings & Concepts, a manufacturer of Ceramic Enamels that was acquired by the Shepherd family two years earlier and today he manages that business. He served as GANA president in 2014. Next year, GCC will join the Shepherd companies in celebrating its 100 year anniversary.


Jim Gulnick

McGrory Glass

Jim Gulnick is the Engineering Director at McGrory Glass, Inc. -- Architectural Glass Solutions. Since 1991, he has had experience in glass processing, engineering, marketing and sales management working with companies including: AGC, Glaston, Tamglass, Albat + Wirsam and Bottero. Jim has a master's degree in business administration and a bachelor of science in electrical engineering with educational pursuits culminating towards a PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. 


Jonas Dispersyn

University of Ghent

Jonas Dispersyn is a Research Engineer and Doctoral Candidate at Ghent University. He has been working on the structural use of glass. His current research focus is adhesive point-fixings between glass and steel. He has been in this position since 2012.


Jon Kimberlain

Dow Corning

Jon Kimberlain provides technical expertise in glazing applications for Dow Corning as an Application Specialist in High Performance Building. He is active in the Glass Association of North America including the Building Enclosure chairman and Board of Directors.  Jon has provided expertise and technical knowledge for industry documents for the use of sealants in construction applications in addition to recent publications on fundamental research into the performance of silicone materials. 


Jorma Vitkala

Glass Performance Days (GPD)

Jorma Vitkala is the founder and chairman of the Glass Performance Days (est. 1992) and has more than 34 years of industrial experience from the safety glass industry, both at Glaston and its predecessor Tamglass. The world-leading glass specialist conference GPD -- The Glass Performance Days -- was organized under his leadership for the 14th time in 2015.


Julia Schimmelpenningh

Eastman Chemical

Julia Schimmelpenningh is the Global Applications Manager for Advanced Interlayer Materials for Eastman Chemical Company. Having more than 25 years of glazing industry experience, Julia concentrates her efforts on applications fitness for use, product qualification, testing and standards development. She is active in many industry organizations such as: ANSI, ASTM, ISO, GANA and others. She is published in trade and peer review journals and holds numerous patents.


Jürgen Neugebauer

University of Applied Sciences - FH - Joanneum in Graz

After his study at the University of Technology in Graz he worked in an office for civil engineering in Graz. With important projects like the atrium roof of the Sony Centre in Berlin, the courtyard roofing of the British Museum in London or the Berlin State Library he gained great practical experience. He then changed back to University of Technology in Graz to the institute for structural design. In 4 years he completed his post graduate study with his doctoral thesis "Structural Design of Façades and Roofs made from Glass". After one year in a glass-processing company he accepted the offer of the University of Applied Science FH - Joanneum to teach the students in lectures about structural design and in a special lecture about structural glass and became a professor at the university.


Kayla Natividad

Texas Tech University

Ms. Kayla Natividad is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering at Texas Tech University.  Ms. Natividad hails from Pecos, Texas.  She anticipates receiving her doctoral degree in August 2016.  Ms. Natividad conducted research on failure stresses in rectangular glass lites while working on her MSCE degree.  Her doctoral research has concentrated on the effects of ceramic frit on load resistance in heat treated glass. 


Keith Boswell


Keith Boswell's design approach is to design, develop and integrate, detail and system concepts in the early project phases and continue refinement through construction documents and the construction phase to achieve the highest level of performance.

As the Technical Partner for SOM's San Francisco office, Boswell orchestrates and oversees detailed design and construction documentation for all San Francisco projects. Since joining SOM in 1981, he has worked on high-rise office buildings, museums, retail spaces, government projects, amusement parks, residential and mixed-use complexes, and international and domestic airport passenger terminals. Boswell is a specialist in designing and executing technically complex building systems, such as curtain walls, elevator systems and special construction. He is actively engaged in the research and application of materials and systems for use in SOM designs.


Larry Carbary

Dow Corning

Larry Carbary is a Construction Industry Scientist at Dow Corning Corporation in Midland, Michigan.  He graduated as a Chemical Engineer in 1982 and joined Dow Corning Corporation. He is part of the Façade Engineering and Architectural Design team for Dow Corning's High Performance Buildings Industry.  He is a Fellow of ASTM international and currently sits on the ASTM Board of Directors.


Louis Moreau


Louis has been with AGNORA since its' early days and has played an instrumental role in the development and success of the company. As Senior Technical Specialist, he brings a unique mix of international experiences in float manufacturing, high performance vacuum coatings, large building glazing, and high-end glass fabrication.

Louis consider architecture as the purest form of art and he loves glass. He likes to explore the limits of materials and process to come with innovative solutions that can be built easily.

Most ambitious projects include More London Plot 1 and Plot 6; Mid City Place, London UK; Tour Granite, Paris FR; Sperone Westwater Gallery, New York USA, QMA and Onassis Center staircases.



Maic Pannwitz


Maic is a highly experience Senior Manager with expert overall knowledge of the design and installation of custom made curtain wall, structural glass and cladding projects. He is specialized in oversized glass.

Currently, Maic is the Senior Executive VP of Sedak in Jersey City, NJ.  His area covers all of the US and Canada, where he covers the sale of oversize glass to US contractors and Façade companies.  He also oversees the customer care/technical support in the US and Canada.


Marc Deschamps

Walker Glass Co.

Marc Deschamps is the Business Development Manager at Walker Glass Co. Ltd. and brings 25 years of experience in the Glass Industry. He has been extensively involved in product and market research and development and has acquired in-depth expertise regarding bird collisions with buildings and glass structures and bird collision deterrence solutions. He is currently a member of the ASTM committee working on Bird Collision Deterrence Material Threat Factors.


Honorable Martin Walsh

Mayor of Boston

A lifelong advocate for working people and a proud product of the City of Boston, was sworn in as the City's 54th mayor on January 6, 2014.

Mayor Walsh's vision is of a thriving, healthy, and innovative Boston--a city with equality and opportunity for all, where a revolutionary history inspires creative solutions to the world's hardest challenges. Since taking office he has worked to create good jobs, great schools, safe streets, and affordable homes, while building a more responsive, representative, and transparent city government. He has won national recognition for expanding young people's opportunities and breaking new ground in community policing. And he has invited the people of Boston to help build a blueprint for the city's future in Imagine Boston 2030, the first citywide plan in half a century.

Before taking office, Mayor Walsh served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1997 to 2013. Representing Boston's diverse 13th Suffolk District, he was a leader on job creation and worker protections; substance abuse, mental health, and homelessness; K-12 education; and civil rights. He played a key role defending Massachusetts' pioneering stand on marriage equality.

Mayor Walsh also made his mark as a labor leader. Beginning in Laborers Local 223 in Boston, he rose to head the Building and Construction Trades Council of the Metropolitan District from 2011 to 2013. There he worked with business and community leaders to promote high quality development and career opportunities for women and people of color.


Matthew Kuba

Stutzki Engineering

Matt Kuba earned a bachelor and masters degree from the University of Wisconsin before starting his career at Stutzki Engineering in 2008. Matt is an engineer specializing in structural glass, lightweight structures and thermal performance. He is currently a licensed professional engineer in five states and is an NFRC certified simulator. Current and recent projects include: Grace Farms, Duke University West Campus Union and Transbay Transit Center.


Michael Elstner

Interpane GmbH

Elstner is the head of the AGC Interpane technical advisory service. He is also responsible for the strategic Marketing of Interpane and a member of several technical committees which are dealing with the application of glass. He is a member of the board of the federal association for architectural glazing in Germany and a member of the Standard committee for DIN 18008 (Glass in building design and construction rules).


Michael Ludvik

M. Ludvik Engineering

Michael Ludvik is an NYC based structural engineer with a focus on glass and special structures. His recent work includes: the Queens Museum and the SkyVenture indoor skydiving wind tunnels in the US and internationally.


Mic Patterson

Façade Tectonics

Mic Patterson is a designer, researcher, educator, futurist, author, photographer, and entrepreneur. He has concentrated his professional and academic career on advanced façade technology, structural glass facades, and green building practices. He pioneered the introduction of structural glass façade technology in the U.S. in the 1990s, contributing into the new millennium with the implementation of a diverse body of novel applications, including cable trusses, cable nets and grid shells. Patterson participated in the establishment of the Enclos Advanced Technology Studio. He has taught, written extensively, lectured internationally on diverse aspects of advanced façade technology and is the author of Structural Glass Facades and Enclosures.


Monika Willert-Porada

University of Bayreuth

Since September 1998, Monika has been a professor (C4) at U of Bayreuth, Chair of Materials Processing and the Department of Engineering Science. Prior to that, in 1997, she was at the foundation of InVerTec eV., Institute für Innovative Verfahren-stechnik. From 1997 till now she is the chairwoman of the executive board of InVerTec. In 2000-2001, she was the founding Dean of the Faculty of Applied Natural Sciences at University of Bayreuth. Since 2012, she has been the Co-Chair of the Glass-Technology Center in Spiegelau and a member of the board of Technische Hochschule Deggen-dorf in Deggendorf, Germany. She is also a coordinator of the EU project Har-Win (in the program Smart Windows).


Nicholas Rillstone


During the brief four years of his early career, Nick has quickly found a niche in structural glass. Through work on recent and current projects such as the 181 Fremont in San Francisco, Nick has been able to demonstrate that a more simplified approach can achieve the same design objectives as traditional rigorous analysis. Having had early engineering exposure at NASA during his childhood, Nick grew up knowing his field of study would be engineering. While earning his degrees, he focused on seismic design and tall building construction. In 2011, he joined KPFF, moving to the west coast for more exposure to these building types and systems.


Paul Gao


Paul is the General Manager of Tianjin Northglass and Vice President of Northglass Group.  He also is a member of the National Construction Glass Safety-Glass Committee. Paul graduated from WuHan Industrial University in 1989, where he received his masters degree. 

Under the successful leadership of Paul, 35 glass technical innovation and practical patents has been claimed. Through the company development, TNG has always been focusing on jumbo size, high quality glass product research.

TNG has successfully managed more than 60 large glass projects including 25 large glass projects and 35 super large glass projects. In the recent decade, Paul continues working with research teams, researching technology, quality, tolerance, standard and more. This holds true for super difficult construction glass and new type glass product, which have become his priority responsibility.


Pu Zhang

Eastman Chemical Company

Dr. Pu Zhang is currently a Research Chemist for Eastman Chemical Company in the Advanced Interlayers business.  He joined Eastman in April 2010 when the company was known as Solutia Inc.  He was born in China from where he graduated with a bachelor degree in chemical engineering in 2005. After moving to the US, he obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Missouri.  He has been an active member of the fundamental research area for Advanced Interlayers.

His responsibilities include:

polymer formulation for ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), polyvinyl butyral (PVB) and others, material properties characterization, manufacturing/QC support and interlayer performance testing with a high concentration on rheological assessment and behaviors. 


Stéphane Hoffman

Morrison Hershfield

Stéphane Hoffman joined Morrison Hershfield Consulting Engineers in 1994. As a Professional Engineer with a Masters degree level education that combines structural engineering, building science and architecture, Stéphane brings  a well-balanced consulting approach to the building envelope by blending scientific analysis with an understanding of aesthetics considerations. Stéphane has consulted on projects throughout North America and now leads their Façade Engineering Team focusing on conceptual design of cladding and glazing systems.


Stephen Selkowitz

Stephen Selkowitz has 40 years of experience in the field of building energy performance, with an emphasis on research, development and deployment of energy efficient technologies and sustainable design practices. An internationally recognized expert on window technologies, window software tools, façade systems and daylighting, he leads a multidisciplinary team at LBNL in the development and demonstration of new technologies, systems, processes and tools.

Thomas Henriksen

Thomas has gained a high level of experience in design across a wide range of buildings and infrastructure projects. His experience includes: architectural competitions, direct liaison with clients, contract negotiations, design development and detailing, coordinating interfaces between sub-contractor packages and overseeing construction on-site, reviewing progress against contractor programs and maintaining on-site quality and more.

He has served as the design director on several large projects including the Maersk Panum Tower in Copenhagen, the Shard, London Bridge Station and the Sowwah Galleria, Abu Dhabi. He is currently affiliated with TUDelft as a Doctoral scholar, researching the application of GFRC as a cladding material.


Tony Cinnamon

Mr. Cinnamon is a licensed Architect and Associate Principal with the firm of Wiss, Janney Elstner in the Chicago, Illinois office. His expertise lies in the investigation of windows, curtain walls and exterior wall systems. Mr. Cinnamon has written articles on the inspection, repair and replacement of window and curtain wall systems and has presented seminars domestically and internationally on fenestration topics including glass failures and testing and repair of window and curtain wall systems. Mr. Cinnamon is a member of the National Fenestration Rating Council and is the Vice Chair of the Chicago Chapter of the Building Enclosure Council. 


Tracy Rogers

Quanex Building Products

Tracy Rogers is the Director of Industry Relations & Advanced Technology for Quanex Building Products. He has Graduate studies in Finance from the University of Rochester, Master Certificates in Business Management, Advanced Marketing Strategy - Tulane University. Master Certificate in International Negotiations - Thunderbird School of Global Management. Employed in the fenestration industry since 1987 working in both the Technical and Sales/Marketing fields. He is actively involved and has chaired various Task Groups and Committees within industry associations including AAMA, WDMA, NFRC, GANA, IGMA and ASTM throughout career in the industry.


Ulrich Knaack

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft)

Ulrich Knaack is a professor at Netherland's Delft University of Technology in Design of Construction. At Delft University, Professor Knaack founded the Façade Research Group. He organizes interdisciplinary façade design workshops and is the author of several well-known reference books, articles and lectures.


Urmilla Sowell


Urmilla Jokhu-Sowell has fifteen years of experience in the fenestration industry. She is the Technical Director for the Glass Association of North America with duties that include managing all technical activities within GANA's seven divisions and committees. 

Ms. Sowell earned both her Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from Texas Tech University and is a licensed Professional Engineer.


Valerie Block


Valerie Block leads the Americas Market Development team for Kuraray Interlayer Solutions.  She has chaired many industry committees, including the Laminating Division of the Glass Association of North America and the Glazing Industry Code Committee.  She is an active participant at ASTM, where hurricane impact standards were first developed. 


Vaughn Schauss


As a technical consultant for Kuraray, Vaughn Schauss has worked with a variety of laminating lines over the years and has acquired an in depth knowledge of the laminating process. Vicente Montes-Amoros

Curtainwall Design and Consulting, Inc.

Vicente Montes-Amoros is a façade and structural engineer at Curtain Wall Design and Consulting (CDC) in CDC's Virginia/Washington DC office.  He joined CDC in 2005 and worked in the engineering division during his first years.  He designed and engineered different building enclosure systems such as: curtain wall, point supported glass walls, natural stone, pre-cast concrete panels, metal panels, etc. He holds a Masters of Science in Façade Engineering from the University of Bath in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Montes pioneered CDC's Solar Reflectivity technology and has given multiple presentations on this and other topics at national and international venues.  His articles have been published in different journals, proceedings, and industry magazines.

He is a registered professional engineer in the District of Columbia, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Mexico. 


Vlad Alexandru Silvestru

Graz University of Technology

Vlad Silvestru holds a masters degree in civil engineering and works as a research and teaching assistant at Graz University of Technology since 2012. His research deals with structural applications of glass and adhesive connections. Within his PhD research work he is focusing on the development of glass-metal façade elements with composite structural behavior. Vlad Silvestru has been a speaker at several conferences on architectural glass applications over the last couple of years.


Werner Jager


Werner Jager has over 20 years of international experience in the creation and management of multi-location teams as well as profound competence in the engineering and design of building envelopes. At Ai3, he consults global clients in the physics of the building envelope, management of research and development, engineering support and customized seminars and training. The group applies product marketing and project management methodologies which analyze and support the implementation of the network of marketing, research, development, quality management, procurement and logistics in a holistic manner. Prior, as Managing Director at Hydro Building Systems, he led the research and development departments of world leading aluminum system for windows, doors and façade product. Jager is a lecturer at the University of D-Augsburg, Faculty of Architecture and Construction. 


Will Laufs

Laufs Engineering Design (LED)

Will Laufs, Dr-Ing, PE, LEED AP, IWE works in the field of structural façade engineering and specialty structures design in North America and worldwide, focusing on the use of new materials, transparent glass enclosures, challenging structures with complex geometries and innovative architectural elements. He lives and works in New York City and Berlin as founder of Laufs Engineering Design (LED). Will believes in the unity of architecture, sustainability and structural engineering, having been trained in both Structural Engineering and Architecture.


Wim Stevels

Eastman Chemical Company

Dr. Wim Stevels is a polymer chemist. He joined Eastman Chemical Company in 2005 and is currently active as an Application Development Representative for Eastman's Advanced Interlayers division for architectural applications.  Wim obtained his PhD in polymer chemistry at the University of Twente, The Netherlands (1997) and studied organic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands (1992). He has co-authored over 15 articles in peer reviewed journals and a number of patent applications.
